‘Reds can do it like in 2005’

“It might be ridiculous to say Liverpool are going to win because they aren’t the favourites – but I think they can do a little bit. They can definitely match teams.”

Fowler, who scored 183 goals in 369 games for Liverpool, claims European opponents in the knockout stage will be wary of how to play them, given the attacking threat of Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

“We accept there have been weak performanc­es in league and cup games,” he added.

“But when Liverpool are at the top of their game and playing against teams, who are expansive and open, they can hurt them. “It will be interestin­g to see how teams play against Liverpool in the Champions League from now on.”

Despite a squad that’s far from the greatest in the Premier League or Europe, Fowler believes Liverpool have enough firepower to pose a major threat to even the biggest teams.

“Maybe the squad isn’t as strong as other Premier League teams, but the first XI can do a job.

“It’s not just a cliche and saying all the right things because I’m still associated with the club.

“We have all witnessed just how good Liverpool are when they play against good teams.

“They have great players who can mix it with the very best of European football.”
