Vicky, Jim, Amelia and Darragh accepts one person a month and it could be several months before she gets a place.

She said: “At the moment, I am waiting to find out if I will be accepted on to a clinical trial in Maryland. In the US trial they use this drug and another treatment called T-cell Fighting cancer cells therapy. They have had good success. The problem is it could be several months. This trial is my best chance of surviving. If I get accepted I will be hoping to fly to the States in March.

“I have fantastic family and friends but neither I nor my family have enough funds to cover my treatment abroad which will probably run into hundreds of thousands.”

She has also contacted the private Hallwang oncology clinic in Germany which was recently reported to have cured the ovarian cancer of a women given a similar terminal diagnosis with funds raised by Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio.

In a statement, the HSE said it funds pembrolizu­mab for the treatment of advanced melanoma while applicatio­ns for funding for the drug in cases of “first line and second line non-small cell lung cancer bladder cancer, Hodgkins Lymphoma” are considered.
