Con does the trick

UCD 1-13 NUIG 2-9

UCD manager John Divilly reckons Conor Mccarthy deserves today off after steering the students to Sigerson Cup success.

Monaghan ace Mccarthy shot 1-6 to secure a 34th title for the Belfield outfit.

But the Scotstown star mightn’t have time to savour the win as his county are due to play Kerry in the League today.

UCD midfield duo Jack Barry and Barry O’sullivan have also been named to play in that game for the Kingdom.

Divilly knows it’s up to Monaghan boss Malachy O’rourke and Kerry chief Eamonn Fitzmaurice what they do but feels the players should be rested.

He said: “Maybe Malachy and Eamonn will give them a break. They put in a big shift for us. They’re intelligent managers. They’ll make that call.”

The GAA’S bulging fixture calendar was put under further scrutiny when Kieran Molloy made a dash from Tullamore to Santry to feature for NUI Galway, having played for Corofin in the All-ireland club semi-finals.

Molloy came on in the 39th minute and was involved in NUI Galway’s second goal which put them 2-8 to 1-9 up with 10 minutes remaining.

But four UCD points in the run in, including two from Liam Casey, secured a battling win for Divilly’s side.

UCD scorers: L Casey (0-3), C Mccarthy (1-6, 3f), E Lowry (0-2), E O’carroll (0-1), C O’callaghan (0-1)

NUIG scorers: E Tierney (0-3, 1f), A Gallagher (1-3, 3f); S Kelly (1-0), D Comer (0-3).
