Ireland secured the championsh­ip title with a 28-8 bonus point victory over Scotland in Dublin. England needed to match that result in Paris, but lost to France.

Schmidt’s side will win the Grand Slam in London next Saturday, St Patrick’s Day, if they beat England, but the Red Rose haven’t lost at home in the tournament since Ireland won there in 2010.

After winning his third title in five years, Schmidt said: “I guess history doesn’t protect you from the future. We knew that today.
