his way with a performance that bristled with character.

Conte and Mourinho shared a hug at the final whistle when they probably felt like strangling each other.

Mourinho had wanted this one badly – and on another day United’s second-half onslaught would have realised at least an equaliser.

But the Red Army had every right to ask why their team only woke up after sleeping through the first 45 minutes.

With Romelu Lukaku only making the bench, due to injury, opportunity knocked for Marcus Rashford. But he failed to open the door.

When he scuffed a decent chance just before the break, it summed up a first half in which he had Mourinho shaking his head.

Not that the Portuguese was faultless. He had a game plan in which Ander Herrera shadowed Hazard (right) to make the contest 10 versus 10. It had worked before. The Belgian sensed that Cesc Fabregas was going to feed a first-time pass down the right-hand channel in the 21st minute and, when Phil Jones hesitated, his brilliant first touch took him clear.

It seemed Jones was running in quicksand as he tried to catch Chelsea’s No.10.

And when he did close the gap, he could only slide through the back of Hazard’s legs as he shaped to shoot from deep inside the United penalty area.
