What will it take to stop slaughter?

-

FRIDAY’S carnage at a Texas high school was the fourth-deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.

The bloodshed joins the long list of American campuses where students and staff have fallen victim to gunfire.

This time authorities claim Santa Fe High School student Dimitrios Pagourtzis, 17, opened fire killing 10 people and wounding 10 others.

The boy is alleged to have armed himself with his father’s shotgun and a revolver.

The rampage again stoked the nation’s longrunning debate over gun ownership.

It comes just three months after a student-led gun control movement emerged from a mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, which left 17 teens and educators dead.

Now celebrities and popstars have backed #Guncontrolnow and it appears to be gaining some momentum.

But it often feels like history is repeating itself while the powerful gun lobby appears to turn a blind eye to these tragic events.

Texas has some of the most lenient gun laws in the US and earlier this month hosted the National Rifle Association’s annual conference, which was attended by President Donald Trump.

The ease of access to these deadly weapons is shocking to us on this side of the Atlantic.

How many more innocent children have to die before tighter controls are introduced?
