TRIP THE LIGHT FANTASTIC

- BY RICHARD EDWARDS

DARREN ANDERTON has hailed Kieran Trippier as the ideal wing-back in England’s new-look side.

The Tottenham full-back (right) has been one of the standout players in the World Cup so far, marauding forward, and delivering dangerous balls for club pal Harry Kane.

Anderton played as a wing-back during both Euro 96 and the 1998 World Cup in France.

And he believes Trippier possesses all the qualities required to prove himself as one of the most complete flying full-backs in world football.

England are benefiting from Trippier’s lightning progress.

“The reality is that most full-backs are now like wingers,” says Anderton.

“He has been outstanding for Spurs.

“Spurs had the best fullback in the league by a mile in Kyle Walker, but they let him go to Manchester City, with the knowledge that Kieran Trippier was there.

“The reality is that Trippier is probably bestsuited to international football because of his quality on the ball.

“You watch Kyle Walker bomb down the line and he’s an incredible athlete.

“Trippier, for me, has more quality in the final third to deliver and create chances with his passing.

“To score six goals against anyone is good – a big part of that was down to Trippier’s delivery.”
