Captain Kane vows to keep banging in the goals

- BY SIMON MULLOCK

club and country – one of the best runs of his career.

“It’s great. It was good to finish the season strongly” he said.

“I wanted to take the momentum into internationals and I scored in the friendly and got the perfect start to the World Cup.

“For me, it’s about continuing that. Can I do it over the next two, three, four games? Hopefully, and we’ll go from there.

“At the moment, I think I can score every time we play, especially when balls are just dropping in for you and things are going for you – you can’t wait to get out there.

“You feel you’re going to get chances and that feeling is what helps you find chances on the pitch. “I’m ready for everything, whether it is a penalty, a set-piece, or anything – I try and practise all different types of situations and make sure I’m ready for anything that comes. “Confidence is high with all the lads. We have been enjoying it and we have just got to go out there against Colombia and do the same.” England boss Gareth Southgate (left) rang the changes against Belgium – and Kane took it on the chin, despite the race for the Golden Boot. “There’s no way I’d insist on playing. No. It is down to the gaffer and he wanted to freshen it up and give everyone a playing chance,” said Kane.

“Before the Belgium game, the gaffer spoke to me and said it was a chance for fresh legs. You don’t always get that in a major tournament. He changed it round, but I’ll be ready to go on Tuesday against Colombia.

“Everyone thought I was going to play against Belgium because I wanted the Golden Boot, but there’s a bigger picture, a bigger priority – to go as far as we can.

“Yeah, the Golden Boot would be great, but I’m still there – and, if we’re in the tournament longer, it gives me a greater opportunity, so that’s another way to look at it.

“You guys are going to talk about it, fans are going to talk about it. It’s been a great start so far, but it’s not something I really focus on.

“My target isn’t the Golden Boot. The target is to win the tournament. That’s always been the target.

“If the Golden Boot comes along with that, then perfect, but the target is to help the team.

“If my goals help the team, brilliant. If not, I’ll be running round, working hard, trying to get assists.

“And that’s all I can do.”
