Magdalene Laundries compo gets extension
Charlie Flanagan A SCHEME of remuneration for Magdalene Laundry victims has been extended to those who lived in adjoining institutions.
The Magdalene Restorative Justice Scheme, introduced in 2013 by then Taoiseach Enda Kenny, offered payments to those who were admitted and served time in the institutions around Ireland.
Now, Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan said those who worked in a Magdalene Laundry site but resided in one of the adjoining institutions are also eligible to apply.
He added: “I am committed to honouring the commitments of Enda Kenny in 2013 and the full implementation of the Magdalene Restorative Justice Scheme introduced for women who were admitted to and worked in the 12 named institutions.
“To date 694 applicants to the Magdalene scheme have received their ex-gratia payments at a cost of €26.1million.
“The terms of the scheme recommended by Justice Quirke included the payment of lump sums from €11,500 to €100,000, special access to health care, upgrading of pension entitlements to the full State Pension for those of retirement age and payment of €100 weekly inclusive of other State payments to others.”
