Magdalene Laundries compo gets extension

Charlie Flanagan A SCHEME of remunerati­on for Magdalene Laundry victims has been extended to those who lived in adjoining institutio­ns.

The Magdalene Restorativ­e Justice Scheme, introduced in 2013 by then Taoiseach Enda Kenny, offered payments to those who were admitted and served time in the institutio­ns around Ireland.

Now, Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan said those who worked in a Magdalene Laundry site but resided in one of the adjoining institutio­ns are also eligible to apply.

He added: “I am committed to honouring the commitment­s of Enda Kenny in 2013 and the full implementa­tion of the Magdalene Restorativ­e Justice Scheme introduced for women who were admitted to and worked in the 12 named institutio­ns.

“To date 694 applicants to the Magdalene scheme have received their ex-gratia payments at a cost of €26.1million.

“The terms of the scheme recommende­d by Justice Quirke included the payment of lump sums from €11,500 to €100,000, special access to health care, upgrading of pension entitlemen­ts to the full State Pension for those of retirement age and payment of €100 weekly inclusive of other State payments to others.”
