Mackintosh, 51, who played the hotel manager in last year’s ITV hit The Halcyon, describes his sex scenes as funny “in their own way”.

He said: “They’re not earnestly trying to represent sex in a generic, soft-focus way. It presents it in a way that feels real, much like the people are, with all of their clumsiness and idiosyncra­sies.” And the actor revealed it is “real people grappling with real stuff ”. He said: “There’s no high concept and that’s what I can relate to and I’m hoping everyone else can. “This is an ordinary household, a loving couple grappling with where to go. There are no clear heroes and villains.” Having set out on her erotic voyage Joy thinks she has unlocked the key to inner fulfilment but it’s not long before things start to unravel. The series deals with the eternal question: Is monogamy outdated and can you love more than one person? Wanderlust, a co-production between the BBC and Netflix, starts on BBC One on Tuesday at 9pm.
