PERFECT TEN FOR O’BRIENS

- BY PETER O’HEHIR

TEN SOVEREIGNS, impressive on his debut last week, lived up to his billing as 1/3 favourite when bolting-up in the Group 3 John Sisk & Son Round Tower Stakes at the Curragh.

The No Nay Never colt’s three and threequarter length defeat of Bruce Wayne proved the high-point of four-timers for both Aidan and Donnacha O’brien, following the treble they shared on Friday evening.

“You’d have to be very happy with that,” said the Master of Ballydoyle (above). “It was lovely to come back and give him another run before the Middle Park (at Newmarket on September 29) and I’d say he learned more today.”

“He has a lovely mind and temperament and you’d be delighted to see his last furlong – he travelled well, got there and opened up well.”

Earlier, the O’briens struck with Just Wonderful, attempting a mile for the first time, in the Group 3 Flame Of Tara 2-Y-0 Fillies Stakes and Sydney Opera House in the opening two-year-old maiden.

Donnacha partnered 7/4 favourite Perfect Tapatino to victory for his brother Joseph in the 50-70 mile and a quarter handicap. And it was Seamus Heffernan’s turn to shine for Ballydoyle in the €100,000 Tote Irish Cambridgeshire as 20/1 shot Kenya, a Group 3 winner as a two-year-old, powered clear for a convincing win. Kenya will now return to Group-level action.

In the other Group 3 action, Jessica Harrington’s ultra-tough filly I’m So Fancy, already a dual-winner at listed level and second in Group 2 company, made her breakthrough at Group 3 level in the Snow Fairy Fillies Stakes, getting the better of favourite Desert Diamond by a half-length.

Kate Harrington said: “She’ll be coming back here on Champions Weekend for the (Group 2) Blandford Stakes.”

And Johnny Murtagh will target either the Bold Lad Handicap (at the Curragh on Champions Weekend) or the Ayr Gold Cup for Urban Beat following his cosy win in the finale under Shane Foley.
