GAA legend Enright dies, 65, after Hall of Fame tributes

- BY EAMON DOGGETT

Hall of Fame pair Leo Enright and Joe Kernan HURLING legend Leonard Enright has passed away at the age of 65 just hours after his GAA Hall of Fame honour was celebrated.

The Limerick player was heralded as one of the finest defenders of his generation and helped his county to back-to-back Munster titles in 1980 and 1981.

He was also an All-star in 1980, ’81 and ’83, and at Friday night’s awards at the Convention Centre in Dublin, his August induction into the Hall of Fame was fittingly marked.

Cian Lynch, who scooped the Hurler of the Year award, paid a fitting tribute to his fellow Patrickswell man. He said: “Heroes like him, legends like him, it’s what makes it extra special.”

After the news of his passing at home on Friday night, tributes poured in for the sportsman who also served 15 years as a Fianna Fail member on Limerick County Council.

Tipperary senior hurling manager Liam Sheedy said yesterday: “Unbelievable talent on the field of play and an absolute gent off it.”
