Hemming stabbed Denise moments after she sent a text message to a female friend, wrongly believing she was contacting another man.

Denise had nine knife wounds – six to her abdomen, two on her back and one to her chest.

She also had grip-marks on her arms, a black eye and cuts to her head.

Hemming was jailed for life for the murder in Hucknall, Notts, in July 2013.

He initally pleaded not guilty but changed plea during his trial. Ryan insists Denise had not been unfaithful. He says: “That is a complete lie. I don’t get why he would think she was cheating.

“I later heard that he had been abusive in past relationsh­ips and that would have come out in court if he continued to plead not guilty. He did not look at me once. Then, leaving court, he said ‘I’m sorry. I love you,’ and he started crying.

“I was meant to be back an hour earlier that evening and I kept wondering what would have happened if I had got home earlier. I saw him as a father figure. They had tiny arguments but I never saw anything like that evening.”

The murder plunged Ryan into a spiral of depression and drink and it has taken five long and painful years to learn how to cope with the tragedy.
