POGBA PENALTIES IN THE DOCK WITH FIFA

- BY JOHN RICHARDSON

PAUL POGBA’S controversial penalty technique once saw the Manchester United star sent off.

Pogba was on spot-kick duty for United’s FA Youth Cup-winning side back in 2011 during his first stint at the club.

And, against Liverpool in a fractious quarter-final at Anfield, his now trademark stuttering run-up was followed by a brief halt and feint before rolling the ball past the keeper who had already made his dive.

That was deemed unsporting conduct by the match referee David Coote who had earlier booked the midfielder for a foul.

A stunned Pogba was shown a second yellow before making his way to the dressing room. Coote ordered the kick to be retaken and Ravel Morrison scored as United’s Under-18s came back from being 2-0 down to win 3-2.

They went on to eventually win the trophy with Pogba one of the undoubted stars.

The next season he left for Juventus after refusing to sign a new contract offered by manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Now Pogba’s penalty routine – which he has employed this season against Leicester and Everton – is under scrutiny by FIFA who are looking at changing a number of rules including the way penalties are taken.
