Mamma Mia... it’s top of the list again

Musicals hitting the high note this year

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and A Star Is Born are the highestgro­ssing movies in the country with the ABBA sequel in first place.

Chief of Wide Eye Media, Eoin Wrixon, said there is a total of four musicals in Ireland’s box office top 10 which is a record.

He said: “Irish audiences have always had a huge affection for musicals, they attract a broad age demographi­c and appeal to theatre fans as well as avid cinemagoer­s.

“They are the ultimate cinematic rollercoas­ter ride, eliciting a wide range of strong and contrastin­g emotions – you can laugh, cry and of course, sing along, all within seconds.”

The genre has a track record of hitting a high note with Irish audiences as the original Mamma Mia! ranks among the country’s all-time big screen favourites with €6.3million in ticket sales.

Figures from Wide Eye Media from January 1 until December 13 reveal Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again pulled in box office receipts of €5.3million while A Star Is Born hit €5.1million.

Bohemian Rhapsody is at No. 7 with €3.1million and The Greatest Showman is three places below at No.10 with €2.4million.

Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born which features original songs could be on track to outstrip the hugely popular ABBA sequel as it is still playing in cinemas.
