SAOIRSE Ronan and Kate Winslet are to play lovers in a sexuallycharged new film.

The Irish actress and the multiaward-winning British star will appear in Ammonite, a dramatic love story by God’s Own Country writer and director Francis Lee.

Ronan, 24, takes the role of a young, wealthy London woman sent to live by the sea while her health recuperates.

There she meets Mary Anning – who was a real-life British palaeontologist from the 1800s – and the two embark on a relationship that changes their lives.

It will be the second period drama in succession for Ronan who plays the lead role in Mary Queen of Scots, opposite Aussie actress Margot Robbie as Queen Elizabeth I, which opens here on January 18. Saoirse’s career is going from strength to strength after being nominated for an Oscar three times, for Lady Bird, which she won a Golden Globe, Brooklyn and Atonement.

The Co Carlow native will be in esteemed company with Winslet one of the world’s most successful actresses having been nominated for seven Academy Awards.

OSCARS

The 43-year-old won for 2008’s The Reader but was also nominated for Sense and Sensibility, Titanic, Iris, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Little Children and Steve Jobs.

Director Lee received critical acclaim for his first feature, the gay Yorkshire romance God’s Own Country, which premiered at Sundance in 2017 as the only British film in competition.

It won the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Directing, as well as the prize for best movie at the British Independent Film Awards.

Although this will be Ronan’s first lesbian role, the actress revealed recently she had no problem shooting sex scenes.

She said she was “very comfortable” doing love scenes with her rumoured new boyfriend and on-screen lover Jack Lowden in Mary Queen of Scots.

She explained: “We choreographed the whole thing so it felt like a dance. Jack and I are very comfortable with each other. We looked after each other.”

And while the actress has filmed sex scenes in both Brooklyn and Ladybird, she said those with Jack were more intimate than any of her previous experiences on set. With cameras focused mainly on her facial expressions, she said: “I know, I’d never done anything like that before.

“I don’t think he’d ever done anything like that before either. It was new territory for both of us. I’d done sex scenes but they’re so mechanical that they’re kind of easy to do.”

Filming on Ammonite begins in March.
