Keep calm and Parry on, Jurgen

- BY RICHARD EDWARDS

A EUROPEAN super league is as far off as ever – so Liverpool should just forget it and focus on the fight for domestic title glory.

That’s according to Rick Parry, one of the key figures in the founding of the Premier League in 1992, and a former chief executive at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were one of the clubs mentioned in the German newspaper Der Speigel’s expose last month about a breakaway league.

It also included fellow Premier League big guns, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City.

Arsene Wenger, speaking in May, described a European super league as “inevitable”.

But Parry said: “The clubs really have their European super league with the Champions League.

“And I’m not sure how much enthusiasm there ever was for a breakaway.

“Would Bayern Munich really want to leave the Bundesliga and go into a European super league and finish fifth or sixth?

“I don’t think it’s what the fans want either.

“La Liga is clearly massively concerned by the [commercial] gap between their league and the Premier League.

“The Premier League has pretty much wiped the floor with everyone when it comes to selling itself, which is why La Liga is trying different things to boost its popularity.”
