In 1987 at 14, Stephen even unwittingl­y dug the hole to be used for his 16-year-old sister Heather’s grave at the family’s Gloucester home, after his father told him it was for a fish pond.

The couple would joke to their other children that they would “end up under the patio like Heather” if they misbehaved. Nine of the couple’s 12 victims were found buried in and around the house.

In his early 30s, tormented Stephen ended up in court in 2004 after having sex with a 14-year-old girl and getting her pregnant.

“My mother sent a letter to the judge saying that I should never release me and I should be locked up for ever,” he says in an updated edition of author Howard Sounes’ book Fred & Rose.

He has now undergone therapy to come to terms with his troubled childhood. As a result he had finally begun to understand the full impact Dgdgd dgdgddgdgd­gddg-
