Mum struggles with me as only gay in the village
She’d love me to find a girl, says Matt
LITTLE Britain’s Matt Lucas has told how his mum still secretly hopes he might bring home a girl.
The 44-year-old actor, comic and writer has made no secret of being gay – but revealed his mum Diana found it very difficult when he came out.
He said: “It was a tough time. My mum really struggled with my sexuality.
“She has accepted who I am – but there’s a part of her I think that probably wishes I’d one day take home a girl.”
But speaking at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern gay cabaret spot in South London, he joked he might change her mind… by taking home a female drag queen.
As he welcomed artiste Holestar to the stage, Matt said: “I think I’m going to call my mum and say, ‘This is unexpected. I’ve met a girl…’ “My mum would be like, ‘Oh she’s very nice. Bit opinionated. Whatever happened to that nice boy you met?’ “If your mums are struggling with your sexuality… bring her home.” Holestar, a former soldier, is a female drag star who has played Glastonbury. Matt made his name in Little Britain with outrageous characters like “only gay in the village” Daffyd Thomas – but says Diana, 73, found it “too smutty”. Revealing his mum is quite straitlaced and hates swearing, he told of having to “keep it clean” when she took part in his The Matt Lucas Awards show. He said: “I didn’t want it to be so rude. It was fun having her on.”
