Roy calls for Maur applause

- BY TONY STENSON

ROY HODGSON says his Tottenham rival Mauricio Pochettino is already one of the great managers in football.

He told the Spurs boss to forget about winning trophies and continue playing fine football and helping great players, particularly English, into the arena.

Palace boss Hodgson is furious that Pochettino is so often classed as a failure because Spurs have repeatedly allowed trophies to slip from their grasp, the latest being on Thursday with defeat by Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Former England boss Hodgson said: “He should be praised for what he has achieved.

“It makes me angry when it’s mentioned that he hasn’t won a trophy. What is a trophy? What’s a trophy got to do with being a great manager?

“I would say people should wise-up to what football is today and stop talking about trophies.

“They should look at the fact he’s taken over a Tottenham team who are now having their longest spell as being considered Premier League title contenders, Champions League contenders and bringing through loads of homegrown players.

“What’s a trophy got to do with it?”

“He’s good. Anyone who watches football and sees Tottenham play would have to be an admirer of the way they play the game, and the way they go about their business. The manager has a hand in that.”
