Raging Coleman won’t be buying ref Moss a Winners’ Hour pint any time soon!

-

Winners’ Hour is the time after an Accrington Stanley match when a victory is celebrated in the stadium’s pop-up bars with pints for a pound.

A community touch from a community club.

After an occasion that encapsulated the captivating charm of the FA Cup – although strictly and quite spectacularly NOT for John Coleman – drinks all round were deserved.

In mildly controversial manner, although probably less controversial than Coleman colourfully insisted, Stanley succumbed to their more grandiose opponents, but did their town proud.

And did their distraught, deeply aggrieved manager proud. He will see that, eventually. Hopefully.

“Johnny Coleman is a football genius”, proclaimed one banner in the Clayton End.

Listening to him in a battered, prefabricated building that doubles as a gym – three exercise bikes – it would be hard to disagree.

How he has got a club this size – with this minuscule wage bill – battling it out in League One and holding their own against Derby County is indeed a small work of genius.

The least Coleman and Stanley @andydunnmirror was a rash challenge to go with a reducer he produced early doors. And a free-kick awarded to Derby just before their goal did look harsh, but it did not actually produce the phase of play that led to Waghorn’s winner.

The ball went out for a corner, which was not properly dealt with.

Sure, Moss should maybe have shown some leniency towards Barlaser and maybe he got the odd decision wrong – particularly the free-kick against Janoi Donacien that so enraged Coleman – but, in truth, this was not some terrible travesty. It was cruel, though. And there was nothing crueller than Derby’s Jayden Bogle pulling down Paul Smyth as the Stanley substitute bore down on goal in injury-time.

Bogle got him just outside the penalty area and was sent off, but the free-kick was wasted, sending Derby through.

Now that was cruel – cruel professionalism.

Combined with the feeling that Moss was against Accrington, no wonder Coleman was bitter.

No wonder he did not feel like a Winners’ Hour pint.

But if he eventually took one on board, if he eventually sees past Jon Moss, he should be proud.

Of himself, the team and the club.
