Klopp glad to be bitten by Wolves

-

LIVERPOOL’S premature exits from both domestic cup competitions might have disappointed those Anfield fans dreaming of Wembley glory.

But, while Jurgen Klopp hates losing any football match, he didn’t shed any tears over the Chelsea and Wolves defeats that ended all home cup interest by early January.

In Klopp’s positive view of the football world, every cloud has a silver lining.

He immediately saw a cup-free second half of the campaign as a chance to recharge his players’ batteries and take them to Dubai for warm-weather training.

It was an opportunity for the ill and injured to recuperate and return primed to perform after what was a welcome mid-season break.

Making nine changes at Wolves brought flak from pundits, such as Alan Shearer and Jermaine Jenas. Shearer naively questioned why Klopp (below) wasn’t trying to win every trophy, while others wrongly accused the German of disrespecting the FA Cup.

But the vast majority of Liverpool fans understood his logic in rotating a team clearly showing signs recently of needing a rest.

Klopp’s top two priorities were always the Premier League title and the Champions League.

He knew it was difficult to compete effectively on all four fronts as his squad is shallower than title rivals Manchester City.

Klopp was 100 per cent correct to prioritise the two most important competitions.

Should the wily German go on to win the first trophy of his Anfield career, that Wolves defeat will be forever viewed as a blessing in disguise by the red half of Liverpool.
