Reed ’em and weep

-

BLACKBURN steamrollered form team Hull, and their cock-a-hoop fans called on boss Tony Mowbray to sign up man-of-the-match Harrison Reed.

The on-loan player from Southampton had a starring role in Rovers’ fourth league win on the trot.

Mowbray has permission to talk to Middlesbrough midfielder Harry Chapman about a permanent move – but poured cold water on the chance of signing Reed in the January window.

Mowbray said: “Naturally he wants to play Premier League with Southampton, but the new manager hasn’t really seen him.

“We have inquired but I think the boy just wants to play here for now. We will see what happens in the summer.”

Two early goals ended Hull’s bid to chalk up 11 league games without defeat, which would have equalled their feat back in 2015-16 when they earned Premier League promotion.

A superbly threaded pass from the in-demand

Bradley Dack set up Adam Armstrong after 10 minutes for a low, angled drive across goal and inside the far post.

Eight minutes later Jack Rodwell made it 2-0 with his first goal in 504 days after being sidelined at Sunderland – even though he was on a reported £45,000 a week.

An Elliott Bennett shot was deflected over, and from the corner a cross by Reed was met by Rodwell to head home from close range.

Reed rounded off an impressive display in the 73rd minute, scoring after Armstrong’s effort was parried by David Marshall.

Mowbray added: “That is as good a performance as I can remember here. We looked like a top team.”

It took Hull 45 minutes to have a shot on target, an effort by Kamil Grosicki which was saved well by David Raya.

Tigers’ talented winger Jarrod Bowen, who is being watched by Premier League clubs, had a secondhalf goal, but Raya dealt pot with on it well. More worryingly, he went off late on after a blow to the knee.

Hull boss Nigel Adkins said: “We were unrecognisable from the team that has had such a great run.

“Our key players were not at the races. We conceded two poor goals, then we were far better in the second half, but the third goal killed us off.”
