Hunt for New IRA weapons near border

Cooley Mountains ARMED gardai yesterday concluded searches for weapons stashes linked to the New IRA.

The operation in the Cooley Peninsula near Omeath, Co Louth, began on Friday.

Gardai recovered 1,000 rounds of ammunition and what is believed to be a mortar tube.

Detectives and officers from the Emergency Response Unit carried out the search with assistance from the Army. No arrests have yet been made.

The operation was targeted at dissident republican group the New IRA, who are believed to have buried a significan­t amount of weaponry ahead of a planned new terror campaign. Noel Rock TD
