10,000 hens hoping for a clucky break

-

ANIMAL lovers are desperate to find homes for 10,000 hens whose chicken farm is closing down.

The unidentified farm is to shut on March 2 and so far only 200 of the birds have been offered homes.

The Heeley City Farm in Sheffield is leading the effort to save the birds, which face being culled if no one takes them on.

Sarah Wild, a volunteer at the city farm, said the 15-month-old Warren hens had “years left of laying eggs”.

Ms Wild added: “They are friendly and make great companions.”

The hens need a minimum 10 sq ft of space each and will cost £5.
