HIG HAS MOR TO OFFER
I’M certainly not getting carried away by a couple of Gonzalo Higuain goals against Huddersfield.
But do I think he is a better bet for Chelsea than Alvaro Morata? Yep, I really do. I have to be honest, I’m still to be totally convinced by Higuain, even though his goalscoring record has stood the test of time.
It’s not his prowess in the box that is the issue, but these days top strikers need to bring more to a team than goals... unless they score an absolute shedload.
Will he do that? Possibly, but I’m not so sure.
I thought Morata was a decent enough goalscorer, but wasn’t suited to the Premier League in any way, and I said in these columns I thought he would struggle. He did. Maybe Higuain (above) won’t struggle quite so obviously, which I why I say he’s a better bet. Yet he still doesn’t quite have the all-round game Chelsea require from their centreforward in Sarri’s system.
Pace isn’t the be-all and end-all of football by any means, but it’s increasingly important in the Premier League and certainly helps strikers.
Higuain had a season with Sarri at Napoli so that helps, but things will be different at Stamford Bridge, which is why I say it is a gamble to bring him to London, especially at the age of 31, when two Italian clubs apparently decided he was past his best.
But I still respect the goalscorers’ union and the fact he has an impressive record. I also respect the fact he’s an upgrade on Morata – and Chelsea need all the good news they can get before facing Manchester City today.
