I hope they’ll spend royally

Netflix laughing all way to bank

SO many of us love Netflix and in particular its own TV series and films.

However, it appears things are about to change and the streaming service is going to be cutting down on its hit stand-up comedy specials.

Subscribers will no doubt have seen shows by comedians such as Hannah Gadsby, Hasan Minhaj, Bo Burnham and Wanda Sykes.

However, it’s now been reported Netflix is modifying its approach to comedy and the numbers don’t lie with releases down from 50 last year to 30 for the same period this year.

And apparently it has got nothing to do with the cost of the stand-up comedy specials despite them costing millions and millions. It’s estimated Chris Rock was paid €36million, Dave Chappelle €54million and Jerry Seinfeld got €90million. And it’s believed they could soon be set to pay comic Eddie Murphy €63million for a string of specials. Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos, said the main aim of the streaming platform is to give viewers what they want.

He added: “We have to continue to do what we’ve been doing, which is make the best content and deliver it seamlessly.”

But it’s not as if the company are short of splashing the cash.

The Los Angeles Times reported that in 2025, the company’s spending is forecasted to hit €31.4billion, which is €14billion more than this year.

If they are cutting back on hit stand-up comedy specials then one can only hope they are investing the money in other shows like Stranger Things and The Crown.
