Running with terminal cancer

- by Kevin Webber

Last weekend was one of those times when my life has felt as worthwhile as ever.

You see, I ran in the Athens marathon. Nothing particularly special about that, except that my friend Nick Butter was running it too. It was his 196th marathon in a little over 18 months – each one in a different country, which is a world first.

There are tales from every country, but you will have to wait for his book for that. The reason it meant so much to me, though, is that I somehow inspired him to chase his dreams when we chatted during a race in the Sahara in 2016. Nick was full of challenges he wanted to complete. Having been told I might not live long, I asked him what he was waiting for, as you never know how long you’ve got. When he set off in January 2018, I did not believe I would be here to see him finish, so running with him was emotional to say the least.

Many other people travelled from various countries to run with Nick too, or just be there to support him. All along the route, people were coming up to Nick to congratulate him on his achievement and thank him for doing so much to raise money and awareness for Prostate Cancer UK.

After finishing, when many of us were worn out, Nick had the energy to speak to everyone who was there to thank them, then reach out to the media – not for himself, but to raise the awareness for the charity that means so much to us both.

And if there is someone you can encourage to chase their dreams, please don’t miss the chance. Until next week, Kev
