when he spotted Mr Lubbock’s body in the water.

He rushed over and pulled him out of the pool and while he waited for an ambulance to arrive told the call handler: “I think the geezer’s dead mate.” Barrymore was nowhere to be found. He was arrested six years later but released without charge and spent years out of the spotlight. Last year, he spoke out about the incident, telling Piers Morgan’s ITV show Life Stories he “couldn’t be more sorry” for his behaviour and is “100% innocent”. Audio of the call emerged earlier this week as Channel 4 unveiled its programming for 2020. It comes after Barrymore, 67, was forced to pull out of Dancing On Ice because of

Michael Barrymore & Stuart Lubbock injury. The landmark documentary, from award-winning KEO Films, will explore one of the most shocking stories of the past 20 years.

At the time, Barrymore was one of the most popular entertainers in Britain hosting a string of top-rated quiz shows including Strike It Lucky.

The film was 18 months in the making and gives access to unseen material from Essex Police’s most controversial unsolved cases.

It pieces together the views of the Lubbock family, detectives, forensic pathologists and witnesses.

Stuart’s father Terry said: “The story has become so distorted and confused over the years.

“So much has been said and written. It’s time to put all the facts together in one place.”

A transmission date has yet to be announced but Unexplained is expected to air this spring.
