IRISH SINGER IN OZ QUARANTINE
Relief as Rebecca exits stricken ship
Rebecca Harkin, from Co Derry, has been evacuated from the Diamond Princess and is being monitored in Australia.
The musician and her partner were working on the ship and were taken off along with other passengers who will now spend two weeks in Darwin.
Rebecca revealed they are “both healthy and safe”.
Yesterday, it was confirmed a second patient in Italy infected with the Covid-19 virus had died.
The victim was a female resident in Milan’s Lombardy region.
Her death came hours after a 77-year-old man died overnight near Padua, in the nearby Veneto region. The Diamond Princess, which carried almost 4,000 passengers and crew when it began its voyage, has been under quarantine in Yokohama since earlier this month.
The ship has seen more than 620 cases of coronavirus and is the largest cluster outside China.
Rebecca said: “Thank you so much
Diamond Princess in Yokohama for all your lovely messages and prayers these last few weeks.
“As many of you knew my partner and I were musicians on board the Diamond Princess ship in Japan.
“I am now in Australia with my partner and we are both healthy and safe. We are getting so well looked after in Darwin along with all the other evacuees.
“We are both so so thankful for the amazing team here. They are so caring, friendly and understanding. “For now, it’s two weeks of sunshine and unwinding after the crisis.”
A repatriation flight carrying 32 British and European evacuees arrived in the UK yesterday after departing from Japan late on Friday.
The plane landed at Boscombe Down Ministry Of Defence base in Wiltshire, with passengers transported to Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral for 14 days of quarantine.
