‘DAN NEEDS A GIGGS BOOST’
MANCHESTER UNITED WATFORD
MICKEY THOMAS believes Wales boss Ryan Giggs can help get Manchester United flyer Daniel James’ season back on track.
James (above), 22, started with a real bang at Old Trafford after his £15million summer move from Swansea City, with three goals in his first four games.
But he has struggled to impose himself lately – and his starting place looks under threat as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side face Watford today.
Wales legend Thomas, who made 110 United appearances, said: “No one knows better than Ryan about the pressures of playing for Manchester United as a young winger.
“A little chat about that would do Daniel the world of good.
“Ryan really rates him. He sees him as an important part of his Wales squad with the European Championships just around the corner.
“I don’t think Daniel expected to play in every game when he joined United. But he started so brilliantly and managed to keep his place.
“That gave him confidence. Some of that seems to have left him now and he has struggled, but he is still just a young lad. I also feel his best position is out wide left, but there’s too much quality already in that area, with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, so Daniel usually finds himself on the right.
“He is also discovering that, when you play for Manchester United, everything you do is scrutinised and there is no mercy if things aren’t going for you.
“But what I really like is that, although he isn’t big, he can look after himself when the tackles come flying in.
“OK, he’s gone off the boil a bit – but he’s a confident young man who can turn it around.”
