‘It’s really not VAR’

- By HECTOR NUNNS at the Valley

LUTON boss Graeme Jones called for VAR in the Championship after insisting his relegation-haunted side were denied a vital ‘goal’.

Jones blasted officials and claimed James Collins second-half effort from Harry Cornick’s cross-shot was onside — despite being flagged offside.

Luton had hit back in the first half through Cornick two minutes after Lyle Taylor’s opener.

The incident could have seen them lead, and they went on to lose to a penalty from Taylor and a first league goal from sub George Lapslie (above).

Jones, whose team are fighting for their lives, fumed: “The big moment in the game was our ‘offside’ goal which we have looked at and it wasn’t. It was legitimate.

“They are huge decisions. It has been given against little Luton again, which I don’t like. If ever a game swung on a big decision, today was it.

“I would have been very confident at 2-1 up. The officials got a huge decision wrong, everyone needs to take responsibility.

“It is a big boys’ league now, the Championship. There is massive money at stake, and on today’s reflection I would definitely be pro VAR. All you want is the right answer.

“When the ball leaves Harry’s foot on the footage I have seen James is behind the last defender.”

Delighted Charlton boss Lee Bowyer, who saw his side stay five points clear of the drop-zone, said: “It was a big three points, but they all are now.

“And there are more teams in this scrap than maybe people realise.”
