MAN UTD v MAN CITY

Portugal midfielder Fernandes has made an immediate impact for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since his £47million signing on January 30. Fernandes earned a point for United at Everton a week ago, scoring for the third game on the trot, and has given Solskjaer’s stars a new threat in midfield. City and England defender Stones, own expectations. The way we go about it is knowing our qualities and game plan. We stick to that and are very confident in what we do. It is a standard that has stood us in good stead for years.” The Premier League title might be long gone, but City aren’t throwing in the towel.

A second-place finish and winning the Champions League are the targets now.

Stones said: “Both of those are priorities for us. I would say they are equal priority – 100 per cent.

“Maybe the league has now gone, but we play on and fight right to the end.

“We’re always striving to better ourselves as players, so there is still a lot to play for. We have got through tough games and difficult occasions recently. It’s been a good time and we want to keep that momentum going.”

Despite a long injury absence for Aymeric Laporte, Stones has started just eight of City’s 27 league games this season, with boss Guardiola seemingly reluctant to put his faith in the former Everton man.

The Three Lions defender has been in the spotlight for big mistakes – the most recent in the Carabao Cup final win over Aston Villa – but he’s desperate for game time with Euro 2020 looming.

“I enjoyed getting a run-out again against Villa and Sheffield Wednesday,” Stones added. “I will try to get as many games in as I can, do well for the team and take it from

there.”

We’ve got to do our homework on him... then play with no fear
