Sinitta before bug hit

Simon dated Sinitta, who gave him first success

EIGHTIES pop star Sinitta has told how she battled coronavirus with help from close pal Simon Cowell – thanks to their “weird” psychic bond.

The So Macho singer revealed she was struck down with the bug after a gig where everyone was hugging each other, just nine days before the lockdown.

But even though she decided not to worry Simon, who she once dated, the music mogul instinctively called her.

Sinitta, 56, told the Sunday Mirror: “I caught the virus after doing a club gig.

“Next day I felt as if I’d swallowed a packet of razor blades. I was in bed for about a week. I didn’t tell Simon I was ill but it wasn’t long before he got in touch.

“We speak quite frequently. I didn’t call as I didn’t want him worried – I thought, ‘Well, there’s nothing he can do’.”

CONNECTION

Sinitta, whose 1986 hit So Macho was Simon’s first pop success, added: “When he got through, Simon said, ‘You’ve got it [the virus] haven’t you?’ And I said, ‘How do you know?’ “He said, ‘I knew it. I could just tell because you disappeared. I knew you didn’t want to worry me.’ He told me, ‘We have this weird connection, I can just tell when something’s wrong’.” Simon sent a private health team to check her out, and even made sure her mum and kids kept safely away. Sinitta developed her symptoms 24 hours after a gig at gay nightspot The Eagle in Vauxhall, South London. She said: “It was a good night but we were all hugging and kissing, all of us sweaty in a closed space. There was no social distancing at that point. “Next morning I couldn’t breathe, I felt like I had a 20-stone man on my chest.” She also praised Simon for pushing on with last night’s return of Britain’s Got Talent despite the virus. “He told me there was talk of not airing some because he couldn’t film live, she added. “He was saying, ‘No, it’s crazy. Our job is to entertain the nation’.”
