Health fears over plastics in fruit & veg
MICROPLASTICS are contaminating the fruit and vegetables we eat, two scientific studies published this week have claimed.
Experts are now warning of serious public health consequences after they found the plastics in apples, carrots and lettuce.
Personal care products marked “flushable” – including wet wipes and cotton buds – are thought to be responsible for over 90% of the fibres in Ireland.
Campaigner Maria Westerbos said: “For years we have known about plastic in crustaceans and fish, but this is the first time we have known about it getting into vegetables.”
