The news that two-thirds of men were drinking to cope during the pandemic came as a bit of a shock. Many men put aside a budget of €50 or €100 a week to socialise in a bar but when you transfer that money into supermarket prices you get a lot more booze.
You’d have to worry about the knock-on effect for families, especially children, if there was regular heavy drinking going on.
That’s not a healthy or safe mix – being forced together 24/7 was challenging enough for some families, particularly with home working and home schooling going on without adding fuel to the fire.
Thankfully, bars, restaurants, gyms and parks will be reopening again which will present more of an outlet.
A glass of wine once or twice a week with dinner is one of my life’s pleasures and I love going for a pint with my mates and that was one of life’s simple treats that I missed in lockdown.
