Steve writes new chapter

- BY JOHN RICHARDSON

AS a proud Geordie, Steve Bruce never tired of his father Joe regaling tales of Newcastle’s past FA Cup glories.

Coincidently, Manchester City – tonight’s sixth round visitors – were the victims of Newcastle’s last FA Cup Final triumph back in 1955.

It was the Toon’s third win in five years and in stark contrast to the mantra during owner Mike Ashley’s 13-year reign – remain in the Premier League at any cost, including the Cup.

Toon have never been past the fourth round under Ashley, so one of Bruce’s (above) biggest coups has been to make him take it seriously.

Former striker Alan Shearer said: “I think our fans would prefer us to win the FA Cup than the Premier League.

“With the squad he has got, Steve is doing as good a job as anyone.”
