LAMPS SET TO LIGHT UP CUP

-

IF it’s weird Liverpool have the earliest Premier League win – in terms of games still to play – and the latest win – in terms of it now being almost July – it’s weirder still to think it’s only the FA Cup quarter-finals this weekend.

Last eight? Honestly, I had to look up who’s left in it, it’s been so long.

City are there, of course – I didn’t even have to look that up. Chelsea and Leicester play each other and that has the look of a game which could provide a finalist.

I really admired the way Frank Lampard’s team played on Thursday – and not just because it gave my Liverpool team the title.

They have something about them now, a young side with lots of desire.

Like most young sides, they lack consistency and, with players such as Pedro and Willian likely to leave, it may be a few years before they hit their peak.

But I think they look a decent cup team already, a fearless team who will score goals.

But I’ve long admired the job Brendan Rodgers has done at Leicester.

They are dangerous and for all their efforts this season, they deserve to have a bit of success.

City are favourites, but I reckon the winner of this tie can give them a run for their money – and I’d love that.

Because I still love the romance of the FA Cup and I don’t want to see it become a procession.
