‘United knocked off perch’
now the club that every top player wants to join.
Hamann said: “When I was a player, the club everyone wanted to join was Manchester United.
“You knew that signing for United guaranteed you winners’ medals.
“They were the biggest club, the club everyone inside and outside England spoke about.”
Liverpool’s first title in 30 years means United still have a 20-19 edge over their great rivals when it comes to championship triumphs.
But the Merseysiders have won twice as many European crowns – and Hamann has tipped Klopp to drive home Liverpool’s superiority over the course of a golden new era.
“Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, United have suffered on the pitch.
“And, with perfect timing, Jurgen Klopp has come in and made Liverpool the club everyone wants to join. In that respect, he’s knocked United off their perch.
“I am not sure Liverpool will dominate the Premier League like United did – because Manchester City will have something to say about that.
“But Liverpool are five years ahead of United – and London’s big clubs are even further behind.
“Klopp has four years left on his contract – and, before that is up, he will want to get past United’s 20 titles and also win the Champions League again.”
But Klopp has ruled out a move for Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.
He said: “A red jersey would look very good on Jadon Sancho. But I don’t think such a transfer will take place this summer.”
