Reus in spot of bother

-

BORUSSIA DORTMUND lost more ground in the Bundesliga title race after being held to a draw by struggling Mainz.

Defender Thomas Meunier cancelled out Levin Oztunali’s opener for the visitors with neither side able to find a winner.

That was largely down to Marco Reus firing his penalty wide just moments after Meunier’s 73rdminute leveller.

And that spelled bad news for fourth-placed Dortmund, who sit four points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

Dortmund did everything right in the first half but somehow failed to find the back of the net.

Jude Bellingham hit the woodwork before he headed just wide after good work from England international Jadon Sancho. Mainz struck with their first chance after the break as Oztunali beat Mats Hummels before firing home from 25 yards out.

Mainz hit the post before Meunier’s first goal for the club.

And the Belgian full-back then won a spot-kick after being hauled down by Alexander Hack – but skipper Reus missed the target.

Mainz climbed off the bottom with the point but it could have been all three as Danny Latza hit the post again in an exciting finale.

Rivals RB Leipzig also missed a golden chance to put pressure on Bayern – who face Freiburg today – by drawing 2-2 at Wolfsburg.

Nordi Mukiele put Leipzig ahead early on but Wout Weghorst headed in the equaliser.

Renato Steffen’s deflected shot put Wolfsburg in front but Willi Orban rescued a point for second-placed Leipzig.
