THE BIG SUNDAY READ

- BY SIOBHAN O’CONNOR

IMELDA May has told of her joy that her mother Madge has been released from hospital after suffering a stroke.

The singer, who hails from Dublin’s Liberties but lives in London, admitted she pines for her beloved family and her home town “every single day”.

Imelda, 46, told the Irish Sunday Mirror: “I always miss home, my mam is home, thank God, from hospital and that’s all we can hope for right now is that she’s home and happy to be there.

“Covid has been so tough for anyone going to hospital.”

But she said explaining the situation to her mam, who has dementia, was difficult.

Imelda added: “You don’t get to visit them or see them, that was so difficult with mam and the dementia, as we couldn’t explain to her what was happening.

“We couldn’t go and see her, so to have her home now is wonderful and the carers who come in and out are just fabulous people.”

The singer admitted Dublin is always calling her – but she may not be able to afford to buy a house in the Liberties.

STRUGGLE

She said: “That’s my constant struggle. I came over here [London] a couple of years ago when all the gig venues were shutting down in Ireland.

“I came over here for work and adventure as a lot of people do and my life was here, my work, but I’ll get back.

“My heart is always in Dublin if I could afford it at this point. I couldn’t afford to buy in the Liberties now.

“Nobody from the Liberties can afford to live there anymore, it’s a wonderful community and people really hold each other up there when needed.

“They’re brilliant people, through all the tough times and the good times, the community is strong.

“I’m proud of Dublin, I’m proud of being Irish all around the world.

“When you travel, I feel we’re the rock stars of the world, we’re the coolest, everybody wants to be Irish.

“I do love what we bring, as a nation I’ve just done a Spotify playlist of artists I’m listening to at the moment that have new albums out.

“The amount of amazing art, literature, music coming out of such a small country, we’ve the population of Manchester and we’ve so much pouring out of Ireland.

“We’re not a big country but we’re known all over the world. For such a small place, we’re overflowing with

creativity and I’m really proud of us and what we’ve done to achieve that and what we’ve done to hold on to that.

“Our culture and our resilience is very inspiring.”

Loved-up Imelda and her boyfriend Niall Mcnamee have been making sweet music together in her London pad.

The singer put right what had been taken out of context regarding a misquoted comment on their relationship. She said: “We met each other
