Prison setback for child abuser ‘singing priest’
PAEDOPHILE Tony Walsh was seen grinning from ear to ear following news of his latest conviction despite two years being added on to his sentence.
The 67-year-old serial child abuser, who had been due for release from Dublin’s Arbour Hill on Friday, is putting on a brave face behind bars.
The former “singing priest” has been nicknamed “smiley” in prison by fellow inmates for his beaming, vacant demeanour.
A source has told the Irish Sunday Mirror that Walsh was most likely just keeping up appearances as he had been confident of walking free on Friday.
The source said: “Walsh was due to be released from prison this week and start a new life.
“He has been given the nickname smiley, however Wednesday’s smiles were no doubt put on following that news.
“He now has two more years to serve in prison. He spends his days in the jail school and working in the braille workshop.
“This must have come as a kick in the teeth.”
This week Walsh was convicted of historical indecent assault offences dating back 45 years. He was handed a two-year jail term for the abuse he carried out on six occasions inside a church in the late 1970s while a trainee priest.
Walsh, who had pleaded not guilty, was convicted by a jury following a trial in May for the offences.
He was also charged with indecent assault offences dating back over 35 years and was remanded in custody for service of the book of evidence next week.
Walsh was charged with two counts of indecent assault of a male between January 1983 and December 1985.
Garda Laura Brennan of Clondalkin Garda Station said he “made no reply” when the charges were read to him.
