CHEERS AND NO JEERS

- SIMON MULLOCK

GARETH SOUTHGATE has urged England fans not to jeer Italy’s national anthem – after warning them that abuse will only inspire Roberto Mancini’s talented team.

The Three Lions boss has been astonished by the passion generated by the Wembley faithful during the Euros – and has made a special plea for them to use all their energy getting behind Harry Kane and Co.

The anthems of Croatia, Scotland, Czech Republic, Germany and Denmark have all been drowned out by a blanket of booing in previous games.

And Southgate fears a repeat could have a detrimental effect on England’s chances of glory.

Southgate (above) said: “In terms of the anthem, we would always ask our fans to be respectful of the opposition.

“We would hope for the same when we travel – and I know when our anthem is booed it does inspire me a bit more.

“Whatever the intentions might be, there’s a good chance you’re giving more motivation to the opponent.”

Wembley has been a seething mass of passion in all five games England have played there.

When Southgate’s men won 4-0 against Ukraine, thousands managed to make it to Rome to show their support.

There will be 60,000 lucky English souls at the final, with tickets given to 7,000 Italian supporters.

And after working hard in recent years to bring players and fans closer together, Southgate has made it very clear how important he feels that relationship is.

The England gaffer said: “It has felt quite unique.

“Throughout the knockout phase in particular, the support has been phenomenal and it does make a huge difference to the players.

“It’s not an experience we have had for a long time. There have been periods when Wembley has been a struggle.

“The first year I was in charge, there were paper aeroplanes being thrown onto the pitch, and a total disconnect.

“It was very hard to get a head of steam up and get that backing, which is why I’m pleased the players are experiencing something they want to be a part of.”

Southgate added: “At club level the fans sing songs about the players and it helps them to feel like they belong.

“Over the years with England that didn’t happen, but there are a few more songs appearing.”
