Hot tips to keep cool at night..

- BY THOMAS TELFORD

GETTING a good night’s sleep in the current conditions is nigh on impossible.

But here are some top tips that may help you get a few hours’ shuteye in this heatwave we’re experiencing.

Drink water

One of the most effective ways to help you get some sleep is to drink some cold water before bed. The hotter your body temperature, the less likely you are to fall asleep. Staying hydrated is important when trying to sleep as your body will lose a lot of fluid via sweat.

Have a warm shower before bed

Having a cold shower in hot conditions feels great at the time but a few minutes later, you’ll start to sweat a lot as your body readjusts to the surrounding temperature. But, if you have a warm shower, it will increase the blood flow to your skin which increases the heat leaving your body.

Stick your sheets in the freezer

There are no “drastic” steps too far when it comes to sleep. A pretty simple way of keeping cool is to have cold sheets. So stick them in the freezer or fridge for five to 10 minutes and then enjoy.

Crack open the window

Leave the window open throughout the day and not just when you’re heading to bed. Otherwise, the heat will have been building up in your room for the entire day.

No pets allowed

You’ll have to say no to your pets sharing your bed. The fewer living things in your room, the better – as they all give off body heat.

Don’t curl up

You’re going to want to take up as much of the bed as possible by spreading out your limbs like a starfish. It increases the air around your arms and legs and reduces sweating.
