Duff’s mentality monsters put on frightening display

-

MICHAEL DUFF praised Barnsley’s ability to transform the losing mentality of the last 18 months as they moved up to fifth in League One.

Josh Benson put the Tykes ahead with a rocket, firing into the top corner from 30 yards against Charlton at Oakwell.

James Norwood doubled the lead with a cheeky backheel from Devante Cole’s low cross before

Jordan Williams got beyond two defenders and laid the ball off for Cole who slotted home.

Barnsley boss Duff said: “It was a difficult game. We couldn’t quite get the press right but you’ve got to give

Charlton credit for that because they moved the ball well.

“But the togetherness that we showed, we tweaked a couple of things at half-time, I thought we looked a lot better.”

Adam Phillips’ fierce drive cannoned off the post before Jack Payne pulled one back for the Addicks – but the final whistle was greeted with boos from the 588 travelling fans. Charlton are now 16th and without a win in six games.

Boss Ben Garner said: “Not good enough in both boxes would be the perfect summary of it.

“It was a wonder strike and we don’t take our chances, but then you can’t give the two goals away.” BARNSLEY: Walton 7; Cundy 7 (Mccarthy (66) 7), Andersen 7, Edwards 7; Williams 7, Benson 8, Kane 7, Cadden 7 (Larkeche (66) 7); Thomas 8 (Martin (85) 6); Cole 8, Norwood 7 (Phillips (60) 7) CHARLTON: Macgillivray 6; Clare 6, Lavelle 6, O’connell 6, Egbo 6 (Sessegnon (72) 6); Fraser 6 (Leaburn (59) 6), Dobson 6 (Mcgrandles (72) 6), Morgan 6; Rak-sakyi 7 (Payne (72) 6), Stockley 6, Blackett-taylor 6 (Kirk (59) 6) STAR MAN: Devante Cole.
