SAYDEE -LIGHT!

Former Burton flop Christian hits the goal trail

- AT NEW MEADOW

CHRISTIAN SAYDEE stunned his old club as he set Shrewsbury on the road to victory.

The travelling army of Burton fans could hardly believe their eyes as Saydee struck in the 13th minute right in front of the goal they were stacked behind.

Because 18 games on loan for Albion last season proved fruitless for the 20-year-old whose parent club is Bournemouth.

Not a single goal. But all that was forgotten as he seized on a flicked header from Tom Bayliss to steer a low shot past Ben Garratt.

That’s two goals for Saydee in two starts for the Shropshire club but manager Steve Cotterill said: “I have said to him two in two games is not good enough.

“When he gets 20 in 20 games then he will get a well done. Let’s keep him going, get him up to speed. There’s still some things he needs to work on in his game.”

Burton hit back through Victor Adeboyejo and bossed possession only to come up against a one-man brick wall in keeper Marko Marosi. The Slovak made some spectacular saves, including one in which he needed lengthy treatment for a dislocated finger after colliding with a post.

Cotterill said: “There was a fair bit of blood but our physio put it back in place.”

And Cotterill’s substitutions reaped dividends. One of them, experienced striker Ryan Bowman, grabbed what proved to be the winner within five minutes of coming on.

But there were anxious moments for Cotterill as basement club Burton belied their lowly status and saw plenty of the ball. The home side also had to see out 13 minutes of added time.

Defeat was cruel on Dino Maamria’s side who remain rooted to the foot of the table despite creating chance after chance. Now in charge following the departure of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, the manager said: “When you dominate a game like we did you should get something.

“The type of football we played was exciting. But I don’t want to be that team that plays brilliant football, dominate and lose.”

Burton had started brightly, with Marosi tipping over a close-range Sam Hughes header. Hughes went close again with another well directed header, this one cleared off the line by George Nurse.

Burton’s pressure finally paid off when Adeboyejo scored from close range in the 57th minute.

But their joy was short-lived as Bowman struck for the Shrews.
