Winter boost for cash-hit families

Energy reprieve for households facing arrears

HOUSEHOLDS in arrears will not have their electricity or gas supply cut off during the months of December and January, it has been confirmed.

The Commission for Regulation of Utilities declared a ban on disconnections from December 1 to January 31 for those who fall behind on their bills.

CRU has also put in place an extended six-month moratorium from today to the end of March 2024 for billpayers who are deemed vulnerable.

This ban is in addition to other customer protections for the winter months announced by the CRU in August following a review of retail data and feedback. These include longer repayment periods, pay-as-you-go options and financial hardship meters offering better value.

The CRU said it considered longer moratoriums but feared extended bans could cause increased levels of debt and a higher risk of being cut off.

Vulnerable customers, who are registered as being critically dependent on electrically-powered devices, cannot be disconnected for reasons of non-payment at any time and this protection remains in place.

CRU director of customer policy Karen Trant said customers in difficulty should talk to their supplier.

She added: “Moratoria on disconnections are vital in providing support and peace of mind to customers during the winter period.

“In addition, the supplier-led Energy Engage Code provides further protection for customers who may have built up debt.

“It is important for customers who find themselves in this position to talk to their supplier at an early stage to find the best solution for them.”
