Hero Williams has Tractor Boys heading into top spot

-

MANCHESTER United loan ace Brandon Williams’ first goal in nearly four years helped promoted Ipswich climb to the top of the Championship.

Defender Williams bagged a dramatic lastgasp leveller – his first goal since November 2019 – as the Tractor Boys extended their impressive start to life back in the second tier.

His brilliant 87th-minute diving header cancelled out Delano Burgzorg’s 61st-minute opener and also put a dampener on new Terriers boss Darren Moore’s day as he was denied victory in his first home game in charge.

“It’s a game we’ll learn a lot from,” said Ipswich boss Kieran Mckenna. “We made too many mistakes but we could have had the first goal, had a crystal (clear) penalty and we showed really good character to come back.”

A brilliant pass from Yuta Nakayama picked out Burgzorg who cut inside and rifled home inside the near post a sweet strike.

Omari Hutchinson then thought he’d won a penalty after being felled in the box, but ref Geoff Eltringham was unmoved, while the hosts were thwarted by a string of fine saves from Vaclav Hladky before Williams’ intervention.

“We definitely feel that it’s two points dropped but we’ll continue building and growing,” said Moore.

“As the game wore on we grew in confidence and we had enough chances to double our lead.” HUDDERSFIELD: Nicholls 6; Pearson 6, Helik 7, Ruffels 6; Thomas 6 (Lees (90) 5), Rudoni 7, Hogg 6 (Edmonds-green (72) 6), Wiles 7, Nakayama 6 (Jackson (72) 6); Burgzorg 7 (Harratt (90) 5), Koroma 7 (Hudlin 72) IPSWICH: Hladky 7; Clarke 6 (Williams (46) 8), Woolfenden 6, Burgess 7, Davis 6; Evans 6 (Taylor (65) 5), Luongo 6; Burns 6 (Scarlett (75) 6), Chaplin 6 (Harness (75) 6), Hutchinson 7; Hirst 6 (Ladapo (75) 6) STAR MAN: Brandon Williams – Levelled with a brilliant diving header.
