Enzo’s nudge and Wink to Southgate
ENZO MARESCA has backed Harry Winks for an England recall.
The Leicester manager says that the ex-spurs midfielder – signed by the Foxes for £10million in an early summer swoop – is at “the level”.
Winks has played a major part in the Foxes’ promising start to the campaign.
He was rested for the midweek Carabao Cup defeat at Liverpool but has otherwise been a regular starter for the Italian boss.
Winks, 27 (below) made his last international appearance almost three years ago in a 3-0 victory over Ireland at Wembley.
Since then, he has dropped out of the picture under Gareth Southgate after falling out of favour at Spurs. He had to go on loan to Sampdoria last season to kick-start his career but is clearly trying to make up for lost time at the King Power.
Maresca said: “For me, I don’t have any doubts that Harry could be a good player for the international team. No doubts. I’ve been
in England for five or six years now so I know the levels and, for sure, he’s an unbelievable player who is helping us a lot.
“It’s a question for the England manager.
“The only thing I can say is, If you ask me if he has the level, there’s no doubt – 100 per cent.”
Meanwhile, Blackburn’s Sammie Szmodics knows only too well how to score against Leicester.
And the midfielder is gunning to repeat the trick at Ewood Park today as Rovers look to upset the Foxes for the second time in a year after a famous FA Cup win. Szmodics bagged the winner as Rovers beat their then Premier League opponents 2-1 to dump them out in March last year. He said: “It was a great evening and probably one of my favourite nights in football.”
