CRUISE CONTROL FROM ABU DHABI

-

Tom Cruise escapes Abu Dhabi airport in his new blockbuster by sprinting across the roof.

This is a little extreme – the airport does have doors and getting out to explore the capital of the United Arab Emirates on a lengthy stopover is definitely no mission impossible.

Etihad’s comfortable airport lounge with its impeccable service is perfect If you have just a few hours to kill. But with 15 hours before an onward 14-hour flight to Sydney, it was time for a change of scene.

There is plenty to see in this hot, oil-rich, ultra modern destination. A short taxi ride

from the airport takes you to the white-sand beach of the St Regis hotel on Saadiyat Island for a dip in the Persian Gulf.

If you fancy exercising your mind as well, visit the Louvre Abu Dhabi with its remarkable art collection intended to bridge the gap between

East and West and stunning chain-mail style roof that looks like it has landed from outer space.

The nearby Qasr Al Watan presidential palace has to be seen to be believed with its gigantic Great Hall and elaborate golden statue of The Power of Words.

The Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental – at $3billion, one of the world’s most expensive hotels to build – is a classy spot for tea and great cakes.

But if you feel the need for a shot of adrenaline then grab an Uber for Yas Waterworld.

It has more than 40 rides, slides and attractions to flip you over, power you uphill and rocket you downhill.

It is one of the best waterparks I have ever visited. And it may have the added bonus of tiring you out for your long onward flight...
